What is Zune?

It is a portable media player sold by Microsoft. They can share files wirelessly with other Zunes and via USB with Xbox 360s and Windows PCs. Any Zune can also be synced wirelessly with a Windows PC. It can play music, videos, and podcasts, display images, and receive FM radio. It was launched in 2006 and its market is growing.

What is NEW in Zune?

• As we know Windows 7 is a OS capable of processing touch technology. So we have it now integrated with Zune.
• It will also offer high-definition video.
• It would come in-built with an internet browser.
• It would include an HD radio receiver which offers higher-quality sound than traditional radio.
• It would enable users to download music using wireless technologies.

Next in this line of improvements comes, Project Natal for XBOX 360. This project was revealed recently at the Electronic Entertainment Expo also called E3. You might be wondering what this project is all about. This is Microsoft’s new offering – Controller Free Gaming.

All these days we have been used to playing games with various controllers like remotes, joysticks etc. Here is a revolution. We don’t need to have anything in our hands. It is an add-on device which can be integrated to the existing XBOX 360.

There is a multi-functional Sensor Device fitted on the console. Players can control their games and Xbox media without touching hardware. The device can sense the movements of the user. It is based on a 3-D depth motion detector camera. It is also in built with microphones for voice recognition. It employs facial recognition for players to log on to their profile. This incredible new experience is made possible thanks to the Project Natal Sensor, which combines an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone and custom processor running proprietary software all in one device. Existing cameras and controllers only trace movement in 2D, but Project Natal tracks full body movement in 3D and responds to commands, directions… even shifts of emotion in your voice!

So a player doesn’t need to use anything other than his whole body. He just needs to interact with the console just as he does to any of his friends.

This indeed is a great revolution. Microsoft brought Steven Spielberg onto the stage to demo the technology, and his avatar moved in real time as he controled the UI. While many called this technology a gimmick before E3, everyone seems completely impressed by what’s being shown here today. This isn’t waving your hands around like the Wii, this is a very immersive technology tied to a very powerful console.

Bing Video Search

One of the most exciting things about Bing is that it is probably the best search engine for searching Videos. So if you are a Video search freak then Bing is for you.

The main advantages is that it offers you a live preview of videos once you move the mouse over the video.

The bing video search gives you some options to filter down your results by length, screen size, resolution and source. Source is most interesting to me as it gives you the list of sources it’s apparently pulling from:

• MSN
• AOL
• MTV
• Hulu
• ESPN
• YouTube
• DailyMotion
• MetaCafe

This is not a complete list. Bing does offer many more search results when compared to other video search engines like Blinkx. But a few videos are redundant in Bing. But I hope Microsoft would be finding a way to correect that soon. So if you are looking for videos just Bing and Decide.

The name itself is new. Though it is not the best t is certainly better than the earlier Live Search. And in that case even Google and Yahoo were just meaningless words until they became brands.

Lets come to the features. In particular, according to Microsoft, Bing will focus on four devisions:

• Shopping – to make a decision on purchases
• Travel – Planning a trip, Booking air tickets etc
• Health – Search about Health Conditions
• Local Business – Finding local businesses

And another feature is that in all searches we are suggested various related searches on the left side of the screen. It also has nunerous options to refine our search results.

Bing indeed seems to be a good search engine. So if you got to search for something just Bing and Decide.

A main visual feature of Bing homepage is that its background image changes everyday.

Here is trick for those of you interested in having a look at various versions of Bing. As we know a search engine is localized to various countries to offer better results. The same has been done with Bing too.

And on clicking on the following link you can visit the Search Worldwide option of Bing. Here you can select any of the options from the given list and have your search results organised according to it. Here for instance if you select Malaysia or Singapore you’d be getting just a few limited options. The maximum options it seems is available in the United States English version. This is more interactive and appealing compared to other regions. You can go back and see the homepage images and hotspots from the past week with their homepage archive. Hence, select US- English version of the latest Bing and start Binging right away.

First, it was MSN Search from the Microsoft stable. The company wasn’t much serious about search until Google proved its business model. Then Microsoft tried hard to regain superiority by launching LIVE, a search engine much similar.

The search engine offers some unique features, such as the ability to view additional search results on the same web page (instead of needing to click through to subsequent search result pages) and the ability to dynamically adjust the amount of information displayed for each search-result (i.e. just the title, a short summary, or a longer summary). It also allows the user to save searches and see them updated automatically on Live.com.

In early 2009, Microsoft started internal testing of a new search engine, called Bing, which has replaced Live Search on June 3rd, 2009. As an effort to create a new identity for Microsoft’s search services, Live Search is officially replaced by Bing and will go fully live by June 3, 2009.

Notable improvements in general searches include the addition of related searches (called “Explorer pane” on the left side of search results) based on semantic technology from PowerSet, a search company Microsoft purchased in 2008, search suggestions as you type, and the ability to keep track of your search history.

Lets see how successful this new engine from Microsoft is going to be.

The taskbar has seen the biggest visual changes, where the Quick Launch toolbar has been replaced with pinning applications to the taskbar. Buttons for pinned applications are integrated with the task buttons. when a user drags a window to the edge of the screen, it will snap in place on that half of the screen. This allows users to snap documents or files on either side of the screen to compare them. There is also a feature that when a user pulls a window to the top of the screen, it automatically maximizes. When a user moves windows that are maximized, the system restores them automatically. This functionality is also accomplished with keyboard shortcuts. Holding down the Windows key and pressing the up arrow maximizes; pressing down the down arrow minimizes; pressing the left or right arrows snap the windows to the sides of the screen.

Windows 7 will be available in six different editions, but only Home Premium and Professional will be widely available at retail.

According to Microsoft, the features for all editions of Windows 7 will be stored on the machine, regardless of what edition is in use. Users who wish to upgrade to an edition of Windows 7 with more features can then use Windows Anytime Upgrade to purchase the upgrade, and unlock the features of those editions. Microsoft has not yet announced pricing information or volume licensing details for Windows 7.

I was pondering about the reasons they chose this name. The word “bing” is onomatopoeic. It represents a sound of arrival or conclusion, for example the sound made when an elevator arrives. Anyways, It is nice.
